Rust Convertor Converts Rust to Protective Primer

Rust Converter is a direct to rust primer for difficult to adhere to surfaces.  It can be applied directly to rusted metal surfaces and it will penetrate to the metal surface, eliminate rust, seal, prime and convert all rust to a smooth ready to top coat rust free surface.   It prevents further rusting.  Great for marine environments and the presence of chlorides.  It is a water based, low VOC, non-flammable, non-toxic coating that provides up to ASTM Salt Spray 500 hours of corrosion protection @ 3 MIL DFT.  It can be top-coated with water or solvent based coatings.
Package:  Four x 5 litre jugs  and 55 gallon drums

FAQ'S

Q. Is there a specific way to use a rust remover?
A. Yes, there is. When you want to remove corrosion from a surface there is a basic process you must follow. First, the part should be cleaned of any oil and/or debris. This gives the rust remover easy and direct access to the corrosion on the surface of the part.  This is performed by degreasing and a fresh water rinse to wash away any residue from the degreaser.

If using those other brand acid rust removers the the part should be rinsed with an alkaline cleaner to help neutralize the surface.  This step is critical because those other brand rust removers leave a low pH or acid on the surface of the metals. Acids are corrosive and the metal will develop corrosion again fairly quickly.   Once neutralized the part is ready for further processing.

When using one of our brands of KPR Rust Removers the extra step of neutralizing the metal is not necessary. Our rust removers leave the metal in a neutral pH state. Kpr's staff will be happy to help you select the proper products for your application.

When using our liquid biodegradable rust remover this step is not necessary, but a fresh water rinse is recommended if the part is to be coated, surface treated or if medium to long term corrosion protection is required.

Q. My product information sheet says to apply a VCI coating at 1.5 mils DFT. What does DFT stand for and how do I know if I have applied the proper coating thickness?

A. DFT stands for dry film thickness. You may also see the abbreviation WFT for wet film thickness. Second, there are two ways to determine if you have the proper coating thickness.

The first method for determining film thickness is to use an electronic thickness gauge.  This unit is used after the coating is dry, and is simply placed on a painted surface and electrically determines the thickness of the coating. These units are fairly accurate but can be expensive to purchase.  The disadvantage of an electronic unit is that it can not be used until the coating is dry.

A better tool for most customers is a wet film gauge. Wet film gauges are inexpensive, sometimes as low as a few dollars, and are used while the coating is wet. This allows you to add extra paint if there is too little on the part. To use a wet film gauge you must know what wet film thickness is required for desired dry film thickness.
